One year at the Rivera house
On a rainy fall night, Maya curled up next to her dad. He opened Aesop’s Fables, and they read about the slow, steady tortoise. Then a small knock came from the hall. "Who’s at the door?" Dad asked. Everyone laughed, because that was the name of the next book.
On Saturday, Maya spread Zibbi’s Big Coloring Book across the kitchen table and gave a dragon purple wings.
On Halloween, she read from The Spooky Silly Joke Book until Grandma snorted into her cider.
That winter, her cousin Leo got his first real paycheck. He sat down with Maya’s mom and made a plan for every dollar.
In December, the family had $600 for Christmas. They made a list, crossed some things off, and still had enough left for cocoa.
And Mom? After twelve years as a teacher, she wanted something new. She sat by the window with After the Classroom, a pencil in her hand.
"Next year," she said, "is a new story."
